The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Selection in England's Test Series Squad
England have opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise spot.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted several previous Tests.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the more likely choice.
Spin Options Considered
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they come out and excel out here.”
