An extensive industrial complex located on the outskirts of the capital is addressing radioactive contamination after an official taskforce detected presence of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 production facilities inside the site, which encompasses companies that export frozen marine products.

Urgent Response and Goods Withdrawal

The finding has led to emergency cleanup operations and the relocation of local inhabitants, following a similar contamination scare in the US that was linked to the Indonesian facilities.

A major international store chain is one of the businesses that have recalled products from their shelves after the finding.

Investigation and Detection of Pollution

Indonesian officials initiated an inquiry after the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a consignment of chilled coated shrimp exported by a local company.

Officials released an advisory instructing suppliers and retailers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, although the detected level was far below the agency's intervention limit. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an acute risk to consumers.

The authority explained: “The primary impact on health of worry following extended, repeated small amount contact (eg through consumption of contaminated products or liquid over a period) is an increased chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radioactivity scans revealed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the twenty-one other production sites, but confirmed they would promptly receive cleanup procedures carried out by Indonesia's atomic energy agency.

A senior official declared that people residing in highly polluted areas would be relocated until the site was cleaned, adding that the well-being of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.

Health officials also performed checks on local employees and people living near the industrial zone, identifying nine individuals who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a medical facility before being cleared to go back.

Cleanup and Isolation Measures

The contaminated sites will immediately receive cleanup operations by Indonesia's atomic energy agency. Authorities have further selected the site of a scrap metal factory as an isolation facility for contaminated goods.

Indonesia, which has no nuclear power plants or weapons program, believes that Caesium-137 may have entered the nation from abroad.

Source of Pollution and Trade Restrictions

A taskforce spokesperson told reporters that scrap metal shipments were the likely source of contamination and confirmed the government would promptly impose limits on scrap metal arrivals. He said that transport were additionally being checked for potential contamination as they moved through the region.

About Caesium-137 and Public Risks

Caesium-137 is a hazardous nuclear isotope that usually appears in the ecosystem as a consequence of nuclear experiments or incidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Small amounts are present in soil, products and the atmosphere.

The level detected in the frozen shrimp was much less than regulatory intervention limits, but the authority stated long-term exposure to including low doses of caesium was linked to an elevated risk of the disease.
